In 2008, at her peak weight, she faced capital murder charges for the death of her nephew and falsely confessed in order to protect her sister. A 2012 TLC documentary dubbed her the "Half-Ton Killer." She was eventually cleared of the charges.
Shortly after the murder controversy, she began to lose weight through a combination of dieting and surgery. By 2013, she had dropped 800 pounds to hold become the Guinness World Record for ''women'Most Weight Lost By A Woman''', a s world record formerly held by [[Rosalie Bradford]]holder for most weight lost.
As of 2017, she lost a further 82 pounds to reach her current weight of 154 pounds.
