In early 1987, after years of uncontrollable weight gain and bed rest following a hospital visit caused her to become immobile, she weighed in at her peak of 1,053 pounds, (some sources say 1200 pounds). She attempted suicide by swallowing painkillers, but due to her size the drug failed to kill her.
Soon afterward, she attracted the attention of Richard Simmons, who sent her an exercise and eating plan. She eventually got down to 285 pounds for a total weight loss of 768 pounds.
